WMC Report.
A five days electronic media workshop was arranged by Women Media Center (WMC) from 18th of January to 22nd January at Indus Hotel, Hyderabad. The object of this workshop was to bring forward the women journalists and the topic to be discussed was Humanistic Beliefs and Practices of Sufism to Counter Extremism. The workshop was attended by the female students of Mass Communication department, University of Sindh which were around 25 in number. The first day went occupied with Mola Bux Chandio’s press conference where he spoke regarding his own political party. The journalists were given chance to put forward their interrogation, while the girls also participated in asking questions to Mola Bux Chandio. After his departure, we were learnt about script writing by Qazi Asif, reporter on News One. The basics of script writing, how to record in a correct manner and the basic terms of media language were taught to the students. Day second was spent in learning about news reporters, how to make news, what is the reality behind live reporting, On Camera (OC), Voice over (VO), live reporting and as live reporting. The third day was attended by a senior reporter Farooq Mohammad who taught us how to record the shots, what are the objectives that a reporter requires to make his report, how to operate camera in different angles, camera handling and we also practiced Piece to Camera (PTC) that developed a confidence among all the girls to speak before the camera lens. The fourth day was quite adventurous. The trainees were taken for a trip to Udero Laal and Bhitshah shrine to practice PTC in public. For that, the girls were divided into two groups and each group was to practice their PTCs at two different places. Group A was assigned Udero Laal whereas group B was assigned Bhitshah shrine. Udero Laal was a very new place to most of the girls as and all the girls found it unique because it was the place where different groups of people, Muslims and Hindus, practiced their religions under same roof. The girls were first given chance to observe the place and then prepare their PTC. Likewise, Bhitshah was reported by group B and they followed the same criteria. Day five was the day of distribution of certificates and practicing OC, VO and Sound on Tape (SOT). The certificates were awarded to each girl by Masood Lohar and senior most journalist, Sohail Sangi.
